This post topic brings me a lot of nostalgia.
I wrote something similar on my other page, and it blew the roof off,
so I’m hoping this one does just as well in showing what’s possible with Gumroad and the right traffic source.
How My Journey Started on Gumroad
Before I started selling digital products on Gumroad, I was more focused on selling on marketplaces, so branching out on my own felt incredibly daunting.
I had grown accustomed to doing keyword research and earning passive income on Fiverr and other platforms, but my experiences with marketplaces weren’t all sunshine and rainbows.
There were times I woke up to emails saying I’d been kicked off the platform I sold on, leaving me to either start from scratch or cry my eyes out.
I didn’t want to keep living in fear of that happening again, so I decided to take control and sell digital products outside of marketplaces.
How I Started My Gumroad Store a Year Ago
1. I launched my first digital product —
It was probably my Canva hustle eBook.
I had already written it before uploading it to Gumroad.
It had been sitting somewhere else, driving traffic from my blog at the time.
But I decided to formally move it onto my new Gumroad store, and it went live.
For you, launching a digital product might look a bit different.
You might need to:
- Do market research to identify what’s in demand in your niche,
- Create an outline for your digital product, and
- Finally, develop the product itself.
For me, it was an eBook.
But for you, it could be a:
- Notion template,
- Course,
- Workbook,
- Masterclass,
Or any format that works best for your audience.
2. Get traffic
I don’t know how it happened, but something about Medium just clicked for me.
I had tried to build a following on the platform some time ago but probably gave up after publishing the first few stories.
This time, though, something kept me going — most definitely hope and faith.
I had no experience with the platform, but I made my first post.
It wasn’t perfect, but I hit publish, and it went live.
As you’d guess, it didn’t get any traction at first.
But that didn’t stop me.
I wrote the next post, and then the next.
Soon enough, I learned a bit about Medium’s algorithm —
- how to get people to click,
- read all the way through,
- and take action on what I was selling.
That simple insight became the missing piece of my marketing puzzle.
In my first month on Medium, I got my viral post.
It was at that time that I started getting clicks on my digital product links, and those clicks soon turned into sales.
By the end of that month, I had grown to around 1,000 followers.
and I could say, it worked!
Medium + Digital Products was the perfect side hustle for me.
In my mind,
- I was right to quit my blog.
- I was right to silence my doubts about branching off on my own.
It all worked out in the end.
My Stats
You’re probably wondering how much I’ve made selling digital products on Gumroad using Medium traffic.
Well, here it is: $6,959.91 from 3,050 sales — some from buyers of my freebies, whether they paid or didn’t.
$6,959.91 is a lot compared to what I used to make.
For me, this income has been a true blessing.
This doesn’t even include how much I’ve made from affiliate marketing and other income streams I have on Medium — income streams that bring in thousands of dollars.
Medium.com has been a blessing.
- I’m glad I took that first step.
- I’m glad I listened to God and wrote that first post.
It was all worth it in the end.
Now I have the best and most supportive community ever.
Conclusion
I’m not special.
My writing isn’t special.
I mean, you just read it — I’m just a random lady on the internet sharing her experiences on an amazing platform.
And my story is proof that all things are possible if you believe.
